Mobilizing Azerbaijani Youth for Action in Preparation for Rio+20
In 2011 Ms. Leyla Aliyeva, the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, announced the initiation of the International Dialogue on Environmental Action (IDEA). It became immediately a unique opportunity for actively engaging Azerbaijan in the global movement for sustainable development. In this context, UNDP started supporting the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s efforts in leading a national advocacy campaign and mobilizing Azerbaijani youth for action in the run-up to the global Rio+20 Summit.
The project has a three-fold objective: 1) engage youth in the environmental movement in the framework of the IDEA initiative; 2) raise awareness of a broad range of stakeholders in Azerbaijan on the environment and development and the Rio process; and: 3) strengthen Azerbaijan’s preparedness for Rio+20.
- Project helped to organize a Winter Camp of Young Environmentalists with participation of youth representatives from Azerbaijan and more than 30 countries. As the result of the Winter Camp, participants adopted the Gabala Declaration on their commitment to joint action towards environmental issues and strengthened their international networking.
- Series of seminars were organized for representatives of eight government agencies that comprised Azerbaijan’s Rio+20 Preparatory Task Force. The seminars engaged the participants to raise their awareness about different environmental issues, such as sustainable development, green economy, Azerbaijan’s potential role in global environmental dialogue, and so on.
- UNDP collaborated with AGAT, a national NGO, to organize a photo-exhibition on “Green Future”, followed by a debate with participation of government and youth representatives.
