Several UN events on Youth issues will be organized in AzerbaijanAug 28, 2013
Baku. A delegation led by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport Mr. Intigam Babayev that includes relevant staff of the Ministry and UNDP makes an official visit to the UN New York Headquarters.
On the first day of study visit, the delegation held a meeting with Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information, Launsky Tieffenthal. During the meeting the initiative of the UN Youth Forum to be held in Baku for the next year was discussed and participation of the UN Secretary General at the event was specifically emphasized. The Youth Forum is a platform where the youth engage in exploration process for possible ways and means to promote global and sustainable development building upon the potential of Science, Technology, Innovation (STI), and culture.
The delegation also held a meeting with a newly appointed UN Secretary General Youth Envoy, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi. The Youth Envoy mentioned the importance of the reforms on Youth policy in Azerbaijan and State Program on Youth as a symbol of state care to youth issues. Mr. Alhendawi also informed that first ever Symposium of UN experts on Youth Affairs would be held next year in June and Baku could be a suitable host for this event.
Mr. Intigam Babayev, Deputy Minister, invited Mr. Alhendawi to Azerbaijan for participating in a Model UN Security Council ceremony as well as virtually observing Youth policy implemented in Azerbaijan, activities of Youth organizations and Youth Houses.
The discussions held in warm and friendly environment and administrative issues related to UN Model to be held in Baku this October have been solved. It must be noted that a four-day conference will bring together 45 university students and graduates of 15 states currently serving as members of the UN Security Council including Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan has become a non permanent member of UN Security Council since January 1, 2012 and its membership will continue until December 31, 2013. During these two years Azerbaijan chaired the Security Council in May, 2012 and will be heading for a month period in upcoming October again.
