The official inauguration ceremony of the Model UN Security Council Conference has been held in Baku today. The ceremony started with the visit of the participants of the conference to the Honorary Cemetery and Martyrs’ Avenue and continued in “Four Seasons” Hotel.

The opening ceremony of the event was launched by the video message of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the participants. In his speech the Secretary-General congratulated the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan and UNDP Azerbaijan, as well as highly appreciated the attention to the cyber-security issues. “I trust that this Model UN exercise will lead to a greater awareness of the real need to develop international standards to deal with cyber crimes. I also hope you will leave Baku with a greater appreciation for the role of the United Nations in our interconnected world” - the Secretary General stated in his message.

Afterwards, Mr. Azad Rahimov, the Minister of Youth and Sports welcomed the participants and informed about the successful youth policy implemented in Azerbaijan. Mr. Rahimov emphasized the inevitability of future co-operation with the United Nations in this area.

Welcoming the participants of the conference the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Antonius Broek stressed the model conference as an excellent instrument to develop what is best in young people: their vision, creative power, and drive to make a substantial difference in the world. "Your experience in this conference will give you a full taste of the complexity of international relations and developmental challenges, the intricacies of listening to the voice of the people, negotiations among diverse stakeholders, the challenges of achieving consensus and the patience required to win progress. This has been my life for the past 30 years."- Mr. Broek said.

The UN Secretary General’s Envoy for Youth Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi, accentuated his great privilege and honour to welcome participants during the opening ceremony of the Model UN Security Council Conference on Cyber Security. Mr. Alhendawi noted in his speech that since the day of his appointment as the UN Secretary-General’s first Envoy on Youth he was trying to solve the problems of the youth all over the world, along with his global mission as the Envoy for youth issues.

It should be stated that the country’s first International Model UN Security Council Conference held on 21-25 October was organized within the joint project "Youth Participation in Decision Making and Policy Implementation" between the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan and UNDP Azerbaijan. The four-day conference will bring together 45 students and graduates from 15 member states of Security Council, including Azerbaijan. Participants of the conference will attend a two-day pre-conference training seminar organized in collaboration with the UN Department of Public Information with participation of former and current diplomats experienced in global security issues. Afterwards they will join the UN Security Council simulation session on cyber security to be held at Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy.
