    Mr. Antonius Broek’s speech in the second round of Post-2015 National Consultation in Ganja.

    I am very pleased that today, we have gathered in the second largest city of Azerbaijan to discuss the future of the world and the region and your country, and your suggestions about how to formulate and implement our development strategy beyond 2015. We decided to visit Ganja, because Ganja is a historical city with a rich and unique culture where most of the population is youth. Ganja is also a vibrant place driven by the spirit of youth with a strong passion for life. Now I know why Ganja is selected to be the 2016 European Youth Capital!

    Over the last decade Azerbaijan has achieved impressive growth rates and significant fall in poverty rates. This success is largely attributed to the effective social assistance programmes, rise in social transfers and creation of new jobs. While the country has overcome the difficulties of the post-soviet independence period, new challenges emerge and a new set of policies are required to sustain the economic growth and continuously improve livelihoods.

    2014 International Women’s Day Statement for Helen Clark

    This year’s International Women’s Day theme – Equality for Women is Progress for All – states a simple truth. No country will reach its full potential if its female citizens do not enjoy full equality. As the 2015 end date of the Millennium Development Goals nears, and as discussion on the next global development agenda intensifies, there is strong momentum for achieving development with equity, including by eradicating gender inequality and empowering women and girls.

This event is exceptional to me because I participate here in double capacity: as a representative of the donor organization that, along with the Government, has contributed, to the upgrade of the School, and, being a foreigner, as one of the future beneficiaries of the project and a client of the school graduates.

    - Welcome participants of the roundtable, which brings together key actors in the field of human rights on this special day. Today’s 24 October we celebrate UN Day already since 1948, and interestingly it is the day that Azerbaijan was elected to the UN Security Council, to bring attention to the work, role and achievements of the United Nations, which have been really good in many areas of for instance achieving the MDGs, gender equality, halting HIV, advancing health and education and importantly in the field of democracy and human rights.

    Speech of Mr. Antonius Broek at Inauguration of the Sumgayit Syslab Center

    UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative attended the opening ceremony of Sumgayit SYSLAB Center and delivered speech in an inauguration. Mr. Broek mentioned the role of SYSLAB Centers in decreasing unemployment in Azerbaijan. He highlighted their assistance in addressing employment issues in the country and satisfying the needs of both employers and employees. SYSLAB Center launched in Sumgayit within a joint project of “Promoting Employment and Innovation in Azerbaijan” signed between UNDP and the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

    Back in September 2000, Azerbaijan, along with 189 other UN Member States, endorsed the Millennium Declaration at the UN Summit which embodied eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) defining a common framework for making a difference in people’s lives by 2015, the deadline for achieving these goals.
