I would like to thank Ms Hijran Huseynova, the Chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children’s Affairs, for taking the lead in observing this campaign and setting yet another good tradition that aims to bring more attention to and intensify actions against the different forms of violence and discrimination faced by women in Azerbaijan.

I am pleased to deliver these closing remarks on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme, after such a wonderful three-day event. I would like to warmly thank our host, the Government of Azerbaijan and the other co-conveners, the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, UNESCO and the Council of Europe and their teams for tireless efforts over the past year to organize such a successful Global Forum.

It is my pleasure to be with all of you, today, in Baku, to represent the United Nations Development Programme, one of the co-conveners of this first Global Forum on Youth Policies. Let me first thank our generous host, His Excellency President Ilham Aliyev, his Minister of Youth and Sports, His Excellency Azad Rahimov, and the other co-conveners, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Youth, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe, for co-organizing this event which will provide a great opportunity for an ambitious engagement around the Baku Commitment on Youth.

My thanks go to Rector Dr Hafiz Pashayev and ADA University for inviting me to speak to you today on the current global debate on what should succeed the Millennium Development Goals at the end of 2015. I understand that this university began its life with the objective of training students for diplomatic careers. As it is diplomats in New York who carry responsibility for negotiating the new global development agenda, the post-2015 debate is highly relevant to all aspiring to diplomatic careers at this time.

I am very pleased that today, we have gathered in the second largest city of Azerbaijan to discuss the future of the world and the region and your country, and your suggestions about how to formulate and implement our development strategy beyond 2015. We decided to visit Ganja, because Ganja is a historical city with a rich and unique culture where most of the population is youth. Ganja is also a vibrant place driven by the spirit of youth with a strong passion for life. Now I know why Ganja is selected to be the 2016 European Youth Capital!
